robots.txt is an access gate; llms.txt is a Markdown map
Although both files sit in the root directory of your domain, they have completely different purposes, syntax, and industry adoption:
| Dimension | /robots.txt |
/llms.txt (and /llms-full.txt) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Status | IETF Internet Standard (RFC 9309), honored by major search engines and compliant AI crawlers for decades. | Community-proposed convention (llmstxt.org) offering a concise Markdown index of a site’s key pages. |
| Primary Function | Access control & sitemap discovery: Tells specific User-agent tokens which URL paths they may or may not fetch, and where sitemap.xml lives. |
Context curation: Gives developers, coding assistants, or agents that explicitly fetch /llms.txt a clean Markdown summary of your docs and pages without HTML nav clutter. |
| Effect on Google AI Overviews | Direct & critical: Blocking Googlebot prevents your pages from appearing in Google Search and AI Overviews. |
None: Google Search relies on normal web crawling and indexing, not llms.txt. |
| Effect on ChatGPT / Claude / Perplexity Search | Direct & critical: Blocking OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, or PerplexityBot prevents search citations. |
Optional convenience: Helpful when a user or coding tool points an LLM at your docs, but does not override a robots.txt block. |
OAI-SearchBot vs. GPTBot (and how Anthropic, Google, and Apple split theirs)
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Apple all separate the crawler tokens used for live search citations from the tokens used to opt out of foundation model training. Confusing the two is the #1 configuration error we see in technical audits:
| Ecosystem | Search / Citation Retrieval Token | User-Initiated Fetch Token | Model Training Control Token |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI (ChatGPT) | OAI-SearchBotIndexes pages for ChatGPT search results & citations. |
ChatGPT-UserFetches pages when a user asks ChatGPT about a URL/topic. |
GPTBotCrawls public web content for potential generative AI training. |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Claude-SearchBotNavigates web for Claude search grounding. |
Claude-UserFetches pages during active user interactions. |
ClaudeBotCollects web data for model training. |
| Google (Search & Gemini) | GooglebotPowers both classic Google Search and AI Overviews / AI Mode. |
— | Google-Extendedrobots.txt rule token only (no separate crawler UA). |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBotIndexes web pages for Perplexity answers. |
Perplexity-UserUser-triggered page retrieval. |
— |
| Apple | ApplebotSiri, Spotlight, and Apple search features. |
— | Applebot-Extendedrobots.txt control token for Apple Intelligence training. |
Production robots.txt recipe: allow AI search, disallow AI training
If your goal is to be discovered and cited in Google Search, Bing, ChatGPT Search, Claude Search, and Perplexity—while opting out of third-party foundation model training—use explicit per-agent blocks:
# 1. Allow standard search engines & AI search retrieval bots
User-agent: Googlebot
User-agent: Bingbot
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
User-agent: Claude-SearchBot
User-agent: Claude-User
User-agent: PerplexityBot
User-agent: Perplexity-User
Allow: /
# 2. Opt out of foundation model training crawlers & tokens
User-agent: GPTBot
User-agent: ClaudeBot
User-agent: Google-Extended
User-agent: Applebot-Extended
Disallow: /
# 3. Default rule for all other compliant crawlers
User-agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: /api/
Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
What belongs in /llms.txt (and how Searchbop generates it)
While /llms.txt won’t boost your Google rankings, it takes thirty seconds to serve and is genuinely useful when developers, researchers, or AI coding tools inspect your domain. A clean /llms.txt follows a simple Markdown structure: an H1 with your site/product name, a blockquote summary, and a categorized list of your canonical URLs with their one-line descriptions.

Two RFC 9309 robots.txt rules that trip up developers
- Specific
User-agentgroups overrideUser-agent: *completely: If you define aUser-agent: OAI-SearchBotgroup,OAI-SearchBotwill only obey the rules inside its specific group and will ignoreDisallow: /admin/rules placed solely underUser-agent: *. Repeat any critical path exclusions inside specific bot groups if needed. - Longest path match wins, and
Allowbreaks ties: When a bot evaluates multiple rules in its group, the rule matching the most characters of the URL path wins. If anAllowrule and aDisallowrule have the exact same path length,Allowwins.
Honest boundaries & official sources
Allowing a bot is permission, not a citation guarantee: Permitting OAI-SearchBot or Googlebot in robots.txt ensures your server does not turn them away, and OpenAI notes it may take roughly 24 hours after updating robots.txt for systems to adjust. Whether an assistant cites your page still depends on relevance, authority, and user query context.
